Airlines History

Batavia Air was founded in 2002 and was based in Surabaya and Jakarta, Indonesia. The airline operated domestic flights throughout Indonesia as well as flights to six international destinations. The airline operated 33 aircraft, including the Airbus A320-200, Airbus A321-200, Airbus A330-200, Boeing 737-300, Boeing 737-400 and Boeing 737-500, and served 48 international and domestic destinations. Unfortunately, Batavia Air was forced to cease operations on January 31, 2013, due to bankruptcy. In 2014, the airline announced that it would sell all of its Airbus A320 aircraft to Vanilla Air, IndiGo and Volaris.

Airlines Bankrupcy

Batavia Air ceased all operations on January 31, 2013, after a bankruptcy appeal by the International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) was granted by the Central Jakarta Regional Court. The airline was unable to pay its debts, including those incurred when leasing two Airbus A330 aircraft from the ILFC in 2009. A number of Indonesian and Southeast Asian airlines have now acquired Batavia’s previous flight routes.

I have flown with Batavia Air throughout Indonesia more times than I can count, and nearly every experience has been an outstanding one. I always feel safe, comfortable and welcome during flight. The flight attendants are more than friendly, the flights are on time, the cabin is spacious and every plane feels far more modern than what many other Southeast Asian low-cost carriers offer. If you’re debating which low-cost carrier to use for your short-haul flights from city to city in Indonesia, I’d recommend Batavia Air every time.

I recently took the 1-hour-long flight from Jakarta to Yogyakarta with Batavia Air. I was looking forward to sightseeing in the historic city, but wasn’t too excited about another flight with a budget airline. I was dreading flight delays, cancellations and an uncomfortable seat. Although, I experienced none of that. Batavia Air was excellent from start to finish with a friendly person at the check-in counter, tons of space in the cabin and on-time service. I’m so happy to have found an affordable airline that I can use for all of my upcoming flights throughout Indonesia and even as far as Singapore and China.

My most recent flight with Batavia Air from Jakarta to Lombok was one of the best flights I’ve ever taken in Southeast Asia. The flight was only about 2 hours long, but that can feel like forever if you’re cramped into the tiny seats that are often offered on budget airlines. I was so excited to find spacious seats (even outside of the exit rows), an extremely tidy cabin and crew members that seemed to love their jobs. My long legs make it tough to fly on most low-cost Southeast Asian airlines, but Batavia Air made it so much more enjoyable.
