Garuda Indonesia tips & tricks

Join GarudaMiles

If you are often traveling within Indonesia, join GarudaMiles. This frequent flyer program offers excellent redemption rates on domestic flights within the country. You can use the miles to book a flight or upgrade from Economy to Business Class. The awards ticket is transferable, which means that you can use your miles to book the ticket for someone else.  Your miles remain active as long as you have just one activity every three years.

Adjust your travel dates

Prices skyrocket during holidays – watch out for local holidays and adjust your travel dates to avoid expensive tickets. Cheap flights are non-existent during popular “red days” like Chinese New Year or Idul Fitri.  Prices can go as high as 5 times the price of the ticket for non-peak dates.

Watch for a good sale

Garuda publishes its web promotions frequently. To get a great bargain be sure to watch the sales on their website over the course of several weeks. Subscribe to their newsletter and follow Garuda airlines accounts on social media. Or just use Promo Radar that collects promotions from all airlines in one place.

Tight airport connection?

Pick a set near the front of the plane if you booked connecting flights. Two or more flights on one ticket often have a tight airport connection, so being near the front exit door can shave 5–10 minutes off your deplaning time, especially on larger planes.

Use multiple support channels to get a response faster

In case of long waiting times for Garuda call center (0804 1 807 807 within Indonesia, +62 21 2351 9999 international) try to contact their consultant on the airline’s social media or live chat. Also, for general questions, you can email Garuda’s customer service at [email protected] The ticketing service (bookings and refunds) is available by email at [email protected]

Pre-pay your baggage

Garuda Indonesia allows pre-paying your luggage online. It can be done via the website, the mobile app, or by contacting their ticket office – maximum of 24 hours prior to the departure time. There are eight packages of prepaid baggage you can choose from: 5 kg, 10 kg, 15 kg, 20 kg, 25 kg, 30 kg, 35 kg, and 40 kg. By purchasing the baggage allowance online you can save up to 10%. Extra baggage prices depend on the route, you can check the up to date price list on the airline website.

Extra baggage allowance for frequent flyers

If you are a member of GarudaMiles or SkyTeam Elite programs, you are permitted additional baggage allowances: 5 kg/15 kg/20 kg (for Silver/Gold/Platinum GarudaMiles Card) or 10 kg/20 kg (for SkyTeam Elite/Elite Plus membership).

Lost baggage prevention

Avoid lost luggage nightmare by removing old tags on your suitcases. Tags are printed with a barcode which is used for identification and tracking – so the old tags can really confuse baggage handlers and the conveyor belt scanners. They are one of the reasons so many bags miss their flight or get misrouted.

Get them early

To enjoy low price tickets, get them early – at least 3-4 weeks in advance. Near your travel date, Garuda prices will start skyrocketing and you will be paying a premium price targeted at latecomers. Use our Cheap Flight Center to find the dates with the lowest fares.

Find best Garuda economy seats

Contrary to the popular view, not all economy seats on a plane are created equal. Some seats have slight advantages over others. It all depends on the aircraft, so we recommend visiting the SeatGuru website, where after entering your flight number you will be presented with a detailed seat map. Hover over individual seats to compare quality, and check out other travelers’ reviews. Detailed seat maps on Garuda’s website may also be useful.

Book with a travel agent if your card is not accepted

If Garuda does not accept your credit or debit card, try to book your flight with one of our partners instead. Start with a flight search, then choose the partner offering the best deal for your ticket. Being independent OTA (Online Travel Agent) they focus on having the widest range of payment methods available – including most credit/debit cards, PayPal, Stripe, Google Pay, cryptocurrency, and more.

Garuda Indonesia review

Garuda Indonesia has kept its service level consistently high during the last years – it’s one of the few airlines that achieved 5 stars Skytrax rating. Garuda offers one of the best Economy class among Asian airlines – the seats are spacious, legroom is more than enough for most passengers, and the entertainment system and inflight meals are above the expectations. For more demanding passengers Garuda has become the airline of choice, offering a step up comparing to most low-cost airlines in the region.
