Fiji is open to international tourism
Fiji opened its borders to foreign tourists on December 1, 2021. Currently, only fully-vaccinated travelers and their accompanying minors can enter the country. There is no quarantine and pre-departure test requirement. However, all visitors need to book an in-country Covid RAT test before departure to Fiji (it must be completed within 72 hours of arrival) and hold proof of travel insurance with Covid coverage.
Transit through Fijian airports is permitted as long as you have a valid outward ticket within 72 hours of arrival, proof of vaccination, and you meet the requirements for entry into the country of your final destination. Transiting passengers are allowed to stay within the airport for up to 10 hours to connect to another flight or – in case of longer layovers – check into a hotel to stay overnight.
Practical tips
- If you are flying to Fiji from abroad, you will most likely land at one of its biggest international airportsits main international airport—Nadi International Airport
NAN
on the main island of Vitu Levu. It is Fiji’s main airport and gateway, which handles 97% of all international visitors. It also has frequent flights to other Fijian islands, as well as to New Zealand, Samoa, Hawaii, Vanuatu, Nauru, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and other Pacific Islands. Taxis and shuttle transfers are widely available, waiting for the visitors just outside the arrivals hall. Resorts in Nadi are a short drive from the airport, with the popular Coral Coast approximately 55km (34 miles) away, and famed Denarau Island — home to internationally renowned hotels like the Sheraton, Wyndham, and Raddison — only 15km (9 miles) away. From Port Denarau travelers can also connect to ferry services to the popular Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. Fiji does have a second international airport, Nausori International AirportSUV
, located in the capital city of Suva. Arriving in Nausori may be a good option if your next step is to take a ferry transport to the outer islands or to visit Suva.
These are also the best (and cheapest) airports to fly into Fiji. As they are used by many airlines serving the same routes, the competition for passengers is fierce, and airfare decreases as a result.

NAN
and Nausori SUV
, both located on the main island of Viti Levu. 13 other airports are located on islands scattered over Fiji's maritime zone. These are smaller domestic airports for island-to-island flights, suitable for small planes - none of them accept larger international jets. Among the most popular airports for island hopping are Labasa LBS
on Vanua Levu, Cicia ICI
on Lau Islands, Vunisea KDV
on Kadavu, Lakeba LKB
on Lau Islands, and Koro KXF
on Lomaiviti Islands.
- Once in Fiji, take advantage of frequent intercity flights operated by domestic airlines such as Fiji Airways, Fiji Link, Island Hoppers Fiji, Northern Air, Pacific Island Air, Sunflower Aviation, and Turtle Airways. Those in-country carriers typically offer lower fares, operate from smaller airports located closer to city centers (you save on ground transportation) and provide flexible schedules – with a wide range of departure times.
- Planning to explore the region? Popular destinations near Fiji can be easily reached with regional low-cost carriers (LCCs) by the likes of Air Niugini, Air Vanuatu, AirCalin, JetStar Airways, Nauru Airlines, Solomon Airlines, and Samoa Airways. If you have a layover in Fiji and plan to fly only a short distance to one of its neighboring countries, these budget airlines are an excellent way to save money.

What is the best time to book flights to Fiji?
The best time to book flights to Fiji is between 2 to 8 months before your travel date. The prime booking window (the most likely time to find the bargains) for Fiji flights is 4–6 months before takeoff. Book when you notice a significant drop in price.
Airfare prices for Fiji flights fluctuate due to demand, seasonal trends, and competition, causing numerous price drops and increases as your departure date approaches. The airlines use sophisticated revenue management systems to adjust pricing for optimal seat sales.
Generally, as seats are sold, prices tend to become more expensive.
Don’t book too early
Most airlines start selling their flights 9–12 months in advance. However, booking a ticket too early in that window can be an expensive mistake – airlines typically start by setting prices at a relatively high level to capture early demand from those willing to pay more to secure their seats.
Peak seasons are expensive
Peak travel seasons are always expensive – due to higher base prices set by airlines for dates they expect to be popular. Try to avoid the high season during summer and major holidays including holidays in Fiji. If you must travel during peak times, book your flight well in advance.
Avoid last minute
Avoid booking flights to Fiji less than 30 days before takeoff. Prices spike sharply then, as airlines are taking advantage of any last-minute travelers who have no choice but to pay up.
Prime Booking Window
For long-haul flights to Fiji, the best time to book your ticket is around 4–6 months before departure. This is the “Prime Booking Window.” After some seats have already been sold, airlines start dropping prices to stimulate demand. They may also offer promotions and sales. This is the ideal time for bargain hunting.
Fly on weekdays
It makes a difference which day of the week you board the plane. Midweek travel (especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays) is less busy and likely cheaper than flying on weekends. Airlines charge higher prices for weekend travel due to the high demand from people going on short getaways or visiting family and friends.
Opt for early morning flights
To save on airfare, select a late night or early morning (1–5 a.m.) flight. Airlines often offer discounts on their first flight of the morning (up to 15-20%) simply because of lower demand—most people are not willing to go to the airport so early. Moreover, morning flights tend to have fewer delays, and airport queues are usually shorter.
Flights to Fiji from Europe
- There are no direct flights from Europe to Fiji — you’ll need to get a connecting flight from elsewhere in the Middle East or in Asia. Singapore and Hong Kong are good options for the first leg of your journey, as Fiji Airways operate many direct flights to Nadi from those hubs. You also have the choice of travelling west via North America with a layover in Los Angeles or San Francisco. Another option to consider is finding a fairly priced long-haul flight to Australia or New Zealand, and then buy a direct flight from either Sydney, Melbourne, or Auckland to Nadi with Fiji Airways, Air New Zealand or Virgin Australia (which will add around €200 to the total flight price).
- Airlines that frequently fly from the UK, Germany, France, and other European countries to Fiji include Air New Zealand, British Airways, Fiji Airways, Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and Turkish Airlines.
- Consider departure airports in neighboring countries to increase your chance of spotting the best deal. Especially look for large airports that serve as hubs for multiple airlines. For example, if you live in Western Europe, check air tickets to Fiji from Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Paris, and Rome. Leverage frequent promotions from European budget carriers like RyanAir, EasyJet, and Eurowings to reach a major hub; from there, take a cheaper long-haul flight to your final destination, potentially saving hundreds of euros.

Low-cost flights from Fiji
Stay ahead of the game. Fly to popular destinations at a fraction of the regular fare.
The cheapest time to fly to Fiji
The weather in Fiji stays fairly constant all year round, with temperatures averaging between 26℃ and 31℃. However, if you’re looking for a cheaper and quieter trip, aim to book your flights for dates from May to June or from November to February (excluding the end of December) – these months are considered Fiji’s off-peak tourism season. The islands receive significantly fewer visitors and everything, including airline tickets, is cheaper.
Flights and accommodation are the most expensive between July and September as many Australian and New Zealand families seek out warmer, tropical weather for the winter holidays. Prices also spike to their highest around the school holidays in December and January. Make sure to book your flights well in advance to avoid inflated last-minute fares.
Island hopping in Fiji
With 8 different island groups to explore and 300 islands in total, Fiji is one of the best places in the South Pacific to go island hopping.
There are 13 local airports across the country (and even more small airstrips), so domestic flight options are plentiful. Local airlines operate dozens of daily flights between the islands, and the prices vary greatly depending on the route. Stunning birds-eye views of the islands are just a bonus! It is well advised that you arrange your domestic plane tickets before you arrive in Fiji simply because these planes are quite small, and tickets tend to sell out.
Some of the airlines that provide inter-island travel are Turtle Airways, Fiji Link (a subsidiary of Fiji Airways), and Northern Air. You may be surprised by how cheap the local flights are – for example, one of the longest routes from Nadi to Cicia Island (almost four hours) costs about 330 FJD (~150 USD / ~220 AUD). Visit airline’s websites or contact them directly to learn more about pricing and schedules.
For shorter distances – 15 to 70 minutes at the most – it is also possible to hire a private helicopter (check Island Hoppers) to travel between islands.
Wait until arrival to get the best Fijian dollar exchange rate
All Fiji islands use the Fijian dollar as the main currency (1 FJD = ~0.45 USD). Credit cards are accepted in big cities like Nadi and Suva (as well as in some mid-range and luxury resorts), but smaller villages rely on a cash economy and finding an ATM can be a struggle. It’s always a good idea to have some Fijian dollars with you.
If you fly to Fiji from Australia or New Zealand, don’t exchange currency at the departure airport — due to the extremely high margins, currency exchanges in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Christchurch, and Auckland will give you a terrible exchange rate. Wait until you arrive at Nadi airport for a much better rate. There are also ATMs near the main arrivals hall that accept international credit/debit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. You can try visiting one of the Forex exchanges in Nadi or Namaka for even better deals.
Know your time zone
When checking flights and airport transfer times, ensure you know the local time zones. The departure/arrival times on your plane ticket and boarding pass are based on the time zone of the departure/arrival airport – this also applies to the connecting (layover) airports.
All the Fiji islands follow the same time zone known as Fiji Time (FJT). As the country implements daylight saving time, FJT is GMT/UTC+12h time zone between mid-January and early November, and GMT/UTC+13h time zone for the rest of the year.
Long waiting times when calling the helpline?
Social media is usually a faster way to reach the airline when a problem arises. Use Twitter or Facebook Messenger to contact the airline customer service and get a response and solution within minutes (see detailed guides for Qantas, Air New Zealand, American Airlines, and others.
When it comes to Twitter, there’s one more trick to get in touch with the airline faster: mention the airline in a tweet about your issue (add “@airline_handle”, for example: @FijiAirways” if contacting the national carrier Fiji Airways). The social media team will often notice it immediately, ask you for a direct message, and respond privately.
South Pacific time travel (the international date line)
The international date line (IDL) is an imaginary line on the Earth’s surface that stretches from the North Pole to the South Pole, running through the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It roughly follows a 180-degree longitude and defines the border between one day and the next.

IDL is not a straight line, though. It zig-zags back and forth across the Pacific Ocean, so it is not always at the same longitude. Starting from the north, it passes west of the Hawaiian Islands and east of the Marshall Islands. As it moves further south, it reaches the Pacific island nation of Kiribati and makes a major deviation east to encompass the Kiribati and Line Islands. Then it passes between Samoa and American Samoa, keeping the former west and the latter east of the IDL. It then stays parallel to the meridian, keeping to the east of the line so that Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand are all west of the IDL.
When you cross the ID westward, you gain a day, and if you are traveling eastward, you lose a day. It may seem like you are moving forward or backward in time, but obviously, you’re just adjusting to a different time zone.
Earn and redeem Qantas Points on Fiji Airways flights
Fiji Airways has a much more robust network out of Australia and New Zealand to its nation than Qantas. The Australian airline flies from Sydney to Nadi only, while Fiji Airways has direct flights from Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch to Nadi and from Sydney and Auckland to the nation’s capital Suva.
Fortunately, Fiji Airways is a Qantas partner. It is an important fact for the members of Qantas Frequent Flyer Program as it’s possible for them to earn Qantas Points and even Status Credits on Fiji Airways codeshare flights (look for the ‘QF’ flight number rather than ‘FJ’).
The Qantas Points can also be redeemed on Fiji Airways flights. The number of points needed to book a Fiji Airways flight is the same as to book a Qantas flight of the same route length – for example, to book a Fiji Airways flight from Brisbane or Sydney to Nadi, you’ll need 18,000 Qantas Points for the Economy Class or 41,500 Qantas Points for the Business Class.
To earn or redeem your Qantas Points on Fiji Airways flights, just visit the Qantas website, and include your frequent flyer number during the booking.
Airlines of Fiji
Fiji’s national flag carrier is Fiji Airways (formerly Air Pacific), based at Nadi International Airport. It offers international scheduled flights to Fiji from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, China, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, US, and the Pacific Islands (including Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu). All long- and medium-haul flights to Fiji have meals, drinks, and in-flight entertainment on their A330 or Boeing 737 aircraft. In conjunction with Qantas, Fiji Airways pioneered the concept of codeshare agreements in the early 1980s. Currently, among its partners are large famous carriers such as American Airlines, Air New Zealand, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Airlines, Jetstar, Qantas, and Singapore Airlines.
Fiji Link (formerly Pacific Sun) is a Fiji Airways subsidiary, that offers domestic flights and flights to the nearby pacific nations of Tonga, Samoa, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
Five other airlines of Fiji – Island Hoppers Fiji, Northern Air, Pacific Island Air, Sunflower Aviation, and Turtle Airways – are much smaller carriers that are mostly focusing on short-haul flights to the nearby islands. They have lower prices in comparison to full-service Fiji Airways. However, they may not provide free baggage allowance, inflight refreshments, meals, or onboard entertainment. In most cases, their tickets are fixed and non-refundable in case of no show-up or cancellation.

from Australia and New Zealand

There are no direct flights from Australia or New Zealand to Fiji. You’ll need a layover in one of the major hubs in Asia. You can also reach the nation’s capital Suva via direct flights from Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne. Qantas flies directly from Sydney to Nadi only (around 4 hours long flight), however on their website you may also find routes operated by Fiji Airways (the airlines have a codeshare agreement). Flights to Fiji
from major hubs in Asia
- There are direct flights to Fiji from the main asian hubs such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei, and Tokyo operated by Fiji Airways. Other South Pacific islands are well-connected with Fiji thanks to frequent flights offered by regional airlines: Aircalin (from Noumea in New Caledonia), Air Niugini (from Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea), Air Vanuatu (from Port Vila in Vanuatu), Fiji Airways (from Samoa, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Vanuatu, and Tonga), Nauru Airlines (from Yaren in Nauru), and Solomon Airlines (from Honiara in Solomon Islands).
- Asia is probably the best continent for short-haul and mid-haul flying. The sheer scale of this most populous region on Earth is reflected in the type of aircraft operating many shorter routes: intra-Asia flyers benefit from comfortable, wide-bodied aircraft by the likes of Boeing 777, 787 or Airbus A350, A330, and A380. When booking your flight to Fiji look for these bigger planes as they will almost always give you the best experience in every cabin, including better seat pitches, higher ceilings, and larger overhead bin space.
- Asia is also home to most of the world’s best airlines. There are only ten airlines that received the prestigious 5-star mark of quality from Skytrax, and all of them are from Asia: ANA, Asiana Airlines, Cathay Pacific, EVA Air, Garuda Indonesia, Japan Airlines, Korean Air, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines. Choosing one of these airlines for your trip to Fiji will guarantee a pleasant journey – delicious meals served during the flight, great in-flight entertainment, and above-average airline customer service.
- Asia is extremely well served by low-cost regional airlines. If you are visiting Fiji and want to see several other countries on a tight budget, they often have great sales with rock-bottom prices, while still offering a relatively comfortable flight experience. Among the best Asian budget airlines you can book without hesitation are AirAsia, Cebu Pacific, Citilink, FlyDubai, Indigo, Jetstar Airways, Scoot, SpiceJet. The cons? Being no-frills airlines they may not provide free baggage allowance, inflight meals, or onboard entertainment. The departure times may also be quite inconvenient as they try to save money by flying at off-peak hours.
