Manado city info
Manado city is the provincal capital of North Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is mainly seen as a stopping-off point for spectacular diving and snorkelling at the Bunaken Marine reserve. The town itself is enjoying a bit of a boom – huge new malls, shops and office complexes stretch a good couple of kilometres along the entire seafront south of the harbour – and makes an agreeable enough place to spend a couple of days. The centre of town consists of the blocks of markets, alleys, shops and fish stalls that surround the tiny harbour and Pasar 45, a busy square constantly jammed with hundreds of light-blue microlets that seem to converge on it all at once.
Manado is the former stronghold of the Dutch and the cultural center of the Minahasa people, for a long time Manado prospered through trade with the nearby Philippines and the spice trade with the rest of the world. Alas, the bombings of World War II and the suppression of a local insurgency in the 1950s flattened most of Manado's older buildings. While by Indonesian standards still relatively prosperous, most visitors will be rather less impressed and head straight to the islands and reefs of nearby Bunaken.
Manado is the starting point for exploration of the Minahasa region's many attractions. Fun-loving and extroverted, the Minahasa people live in neat wood frame houses, with fences and flower gardens, giving Manado a European feel. Inland from Manado, a trip through the Minahasa Highlands will take you to intriguing prehistoric above-ground burial sites, volcanoes, hot springs, the highland lake Tondano and breathtaking panoramas of lush mountains, coffee and coconut plantations, orchid gardens and terraced hillsides.
One very distinctive thing here is the large number of christian population compare with other cities in Indonesia.A lot of churches built so close to one another across this city and downtown area of minahasa.
