Tigerair is now the largest low-cost airline headquartered in Singapore. During the airline’s first year in the skies, Tigerair flew roughly 1.2 million passengers. Tigerair, also known as Tiger Airways, became the first low-cost airline from Singapore to obtain permission to expand its routes to China in 2006. The airline now operates flights to the Chinese cities of Guangzhou, Haikou and Shenzhen. In 2007, Tiger Airways began operating flights to Australia and is now in competition with some of the industry’s leading low-cost carriers, including Virgin Blue and Qantas/Jetstar.
Although Tigerair has become a major airline with access to a long list of domestic and international destinations, it is still classified as a low-cost carrier. The growing airline is now listed on Singapore Exchange Limited (SGX).
