Sibolga city info
Sibolga is the largest town on the west coast of North Sumatra province and is the main port of call for those traveling to the island of Nias. It is a lengthy and often strenuous drive from any of the provincial capitals in the area (Medan, Padang, Banda Aceh) but holds some popularity with domestic tourists in this region of Sumatra. Although pretty, Sibolga has little to offer tourists and there is little reason to hang around here.
Poncan Ketek Island (Small Poncan Island) in Sibolga Bay was once the location of a fort. British, Dutch, French and American traders passed through here. It is thought Stamford Raffles passed through before he moved to Bengkulu in south Sumatra. From Bengkulu Raffles, after relinquishing the Port to the Dutch, established the trade port that became Singapore.
The town is stretched between the Indian Ocean and the Bukit Barisan Mountains, which offer stunning sunset views of the town the the coastal area. Past discussion has included developing a monorail along the mountianside to increase tourism but other infrastructure projects took higher priority in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake an resulting tsunami which caused some damage to the town.
Most people simply visit in order to catch a ferry to Nias Island, with the pretty journey taking around 12 hours. However, those who miss the last ferry will find that there are plenty of places to spend the night here. Fresh seafood is plentiful, making this a good place to stop for lunch before continuing to one of the area's beautiful white sand beaches. Sibolga has a pretty beach or two of its own, and those who arrive at the weekend and want to escape the crowds on Nias might want to hang out here for a while. Scuba divers and snorkelers will discover colorful fish and coral beneath the water line. The best time to go is during the dry season from May to October.
