Lombok city info

Mataram is a Lombok's capital and an agglomeration of a number of villages that have grown together with a total population of 330,000. The main ones are: Ampenan (the harbour on the west coast and the site of the airport), Mataram itself (administrative center), and Cakranegara (business centre to the east). Mataram is the administrative centre and Sweta the transport hub of the whole island.

Mataram is not an unattractive city and it has some broad tree-lined avenues, but, as sights are thin on the ground and there are beaches close by at Senggigi, very few travellers choose to stay here. It has the Water Palace, which is worth a visit and the largest temple of Lombok, the Pura Meru. At around the beginning of the 18th century, Mataram was the residence of the crown prince of Karang Asem,a kingdom in southern Bali. The ruler himself had his seat in Cakranegara - the royal palace no longer exists, but many of the old temples and pleasure gardens are still there.
