Batam city info

Batam is an island and the largest city in Riau Islands Province of Indonesia, known for its free trade zone area as part of the Sijori Growth Triangle. Batam is an island located very strategically located in the international cruise lines. The city has close proximity to Singapore and Malaysia. It is located 20 km off Singapore's south coast (or twenty minutes by air-conditioned ferry), and has a population of about 1,000,000. The island's economy benefits from being close to Singapore, and, with lower labour costs and special government incentives, is the site of many factories operated by Singaporean companie. Batam, along with parts of neighboring Bintan and Karimun, are a part of a Special Economic Zone with Singapore; this zone eliminates tariffs and value-added taxes for goods shipped between Batam and Singapore.

Batam Island was first inhabited by people called the strait melayu since AD 231. Island who had been a field of struggle Admiral Hang Nadim in fighting the invaders are used by the government in the 1960s as a petroleum logistics base on the island of Sambu.

Batam is Indonesia's equivalent to China's SEZ's (Special Economic Zones) - a place where the nation's economic planners test new economic policies and ideas. With the rapid development of Batam Island, in the 1980s, based on Government Regulation districts that are part of Batam Islands regency, Riau, Batam upgraded the status of a municipality which has the task of running the government administration. In the era of the Reformation in the late decades of the 1990s, the Municipality of Batam changed administratively autonomous status to the Batam City Government to perform the function of governance and development by involving the Agency BIDA.

Community Batam is a heterogeneous society composed of various tribes and groups. The dominant tribes, among others, the Malays, Minangkabau, Batak, and Javanese. Islam is the religion of the majority in Batam. Indonesian is used as the language of instruction daily.

Batam is generally safe during the daytime hours, but at night if you are in the entertainment areas of Nagoya you should exercise caution. If you really have to get back to your hotel call the hotel and have them send a car to pick you up. As the taxis are not regulated or owned by a central group (like Bluebird in Jakarta) you may not be safe hiring a taxi off the street either.
