Mandala: the essential airline guide
Mandala Airlines info
PT Mandala Airlines is a privately-owned low cost airline established in 1969, with a base at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. The airline was initially a part of the body of the Indonesian military - until 2006, when it was acquired by Indonesian transport group Cardig International.
Mandala operates a network of domestic services within Indonesia (13 destinations), focusing on Western Indonesia, and using a fleet of narrow body Airbuses. It also has 3 international destinations - Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore.
The airline was named after Operation Mandala, the military operations to incorporate West Papua into Indonesia. The name also refers to mandala, a Sanskrit term for a diagram symbolizing the universe (which is used as the logo of the company).
Mandala Airlines 2011 troubles
In January of 2011 Mandala announced that it suspends operations after revealing huge losses and debts of Rp 2.45 trillion (US$280 million). In April the company has fired half of its staff. In May 2011, Saratoga Group acquired a 51% stake in the airline, while Singapore-based Tiger Airways took 33%. Other creditors, through a debt-to-equity swap, will hold the remaining 16%. It is anticipated that Mandala Airlines will start to fly again in 2012.
Airline safety
In 2005 Mandala experienced a high profile accident in Medan. Boeing 737-200 departing for Jakarta crashed seconds after taking off from Medan killing 100 out of 117 passengers and crew members.
After the accident Mandala transformed its image into a modern airline satisfying international standards of safety, taking advantage of the relatively young age of its fleet. Mandala has completed the IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and is also listed in Category 1 by the Indonesian Civil Aviation Authority for quality of airline safety.
Its safety improvements were recognized by the European Union and the Mandala was among four Indonesian airlines (Garuda Indonesia, Airfast Indonesia, Premiair) which were officially removed from the EU airline ban list in 2009.
