Founded in 1969, Mandala was one of the oldest Indonesian airlines, initially brought to life for military purposes. In 2012, due to financial problems, Mandala was incorporated to Tiger Airways, however it didn't help the airline to stand the test of strong competitors and eventually was forced to cease operations on 1 July, 2014.

PT Mandala Airlines is a privately-owned low cost airline established in 1969, with a base at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. The airline was initially a part of the body of the Indonesian military - until 2006, when it was acquired by Indonesian transport group Cardig International.
Mandala operates a network of domestic services within Indonesia (13 destinations), focusing on Western Indonesia, and using a fleet of narrow body Airbuses. It also has 3 international destinations - Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore.
The airline's name owes its origin to 'Mandala' military operation aiming to incorporate West Papua into Indonesia. It also refers to a Sanskrit term for a diagram representing the universe (see the company logo).
Mandala Airlines 2011 troubles
In January of 2011 Mandala announced that it suspends operations after revealing huge losses and debts of Rp 2.45 trillion (US$280 million). In April the company has fired half of its staff. In May 2011, Saratoga Group acquired a 51% stake in the airline, while Singapore-based Tiger Airways took 33%. Other creditors, through a debt-to-equity swap, will hold the remaining 16%. It is anticipated that Mandala Airlines will start to fly again in 2012.
In 2005 Mandala experienced a high profile accident in Medan. Boeing 737-200 departing for Jakarta crashed seconds after taking off from Medan killing 100 out of 117 passengers and crew members.
After the accident Mandala transformed its image into a modern airline satisfying international standards of safety, taking advantage of the relatively young age of its fleet. Mandala has completed the IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and is also listed in Category 1 by the Indonesian Civil Aviation Authority for quality of airline safety.
Its safety improvements were recognized by the European Union and the Mandala was among four Indonesian airlines (Garuda Indonesia, Airfast Indonesia, Premiair) which were officially removed from the EU airline ban list in 2009.

It has been announced, that popular low-cost airline Tigerair Mandala will stop all its operational flights starting from July 1, 2014. The announcement was made to Singapore Stock Exchange in the evening of June 18.
